i have no idea but i don't think there are any config files stored in the box at once. it could be similar to tiers used in satillite cards.

ok
the reason im asking is to see if the tiers or packets could be sniffed by using a cable modem and ethereal.
it would help to get a better understanding on how the activation works.
since the boxs have their own mac address and the newer dvr and hd boxs have ip address and run on dosics 1.1

i would say the packets are encrypted or these boxes would have been hacked a long time ago. we have 6200 and 6208(dvr) boxes here but the docsis modem in them isn't even enabled. works just like any other dct and it is controlled by the unit address. the mac address on the newer units is only for the built in docsis modem.

ok I was wondering why their was a rj-45 connecter on the back of them.
1 more thing on the see configuration in the main menu on the bottom it has what looks like tier info. I forgot to write down the the ones I installed, I'll remember next week and compare them per package and see if their is a diff.

i think i know what you are reffering to. do you mean the MCA address? that is retrieved by the box from the DAC in the cable company head end. It should be the same for all boxes in your area and usually is used to control the time zone and channel line up for your city.

firmware should stay the same, unless the newest version wasn't in the box before zapping it. generally the cable company sends their boxes out with the newest firmware and tv guide apps already installed. just a matter of turning on the appropriate channels whe it is connected at customers house.

oh I didnt mean to say firmware I was going to put vmram where I'm thinking the teir info resides. unless anyone else has an idea. I'm able to check unprovsioned box's and then recheck them after they have being installed in customers houses. ;D
