I have a unit (non-ph) which has a rom firmware of 5.7x and a flash firmware of 5.8x.
I uploaded a legal nvram which allowed the box to download firmware 7.93. My issue with this unit was the channel lineup was insane. So I loaded up the old nvram to see If I 'connected' the nvram if it would fix the channels .... The box did get connected, but re-enabled the 5.7x firmware. 5.7 was not able to use the guide or menu. So I switched back to my legal nvram. 5.7x is still enabled, and 7.93 is disabled.
also the preview app has a status of ennorun.
Is there any way to re-enable the new firmware. Bearing in mind I cannot program this unit. (2244/1161 CR4 - similar to ph6, mx flash).

download newest version of bdm software. check the general section. it's supposed to allow non ph boards to be programmed. i haven't had the chance to try it myself though, but before the software was updated i couldn't even change nvram's without problems. i have three of them so i know what you are going through.

I used 0.421 latest
the flash IC is MX, but can't program.
When programming, I see the first row of dots, and two dots on second line, then freeses.
Out of curiosity I tried the various other flash types, all had the same result.
I can change nvram easily.
I let those boxes go now, at least they are 'connected' and have the guide.
I would like to know if anyone has repeatable success with non-ph boards for future reference.
If so, some sort of thread would be good with instructions for each. Getting hold of PH7 & 8 boards is hard, even though our legal box is a PH8.
I had more success with a General instruments non-ph board. That looked huge & ancient, couldn't program but opened up the free digital chanels.
Seems to me that there is nvram outside the 40K that is also responsible for enabling or disabling firmware.

The non-ph board uses two chip, please only select "ST M29W800AB". All othse selection is for one chip flash. I think MX is compatible with "ST M29W800AB" in flash commands.

I tried ST, went through the motions longer than MX, but no programming occurred.
I'll get the box back tomorow & see If I can program again using ST once again.... Just incase I was out of my mind or sommin'.

Just incase I was out of my mind or sommin'. All of my non ph are the st chip. Did you try to erase the chip first and then program? I found if i left the erase and program boxes both checked it would fail. if i erase and then program it works.
